Nokia to launch mobile TV service with MiTV in Malaysia
Malaysian pay-TV operator MiTV Networks will launch a DVB-H-based commercial mobile broadcast TV service with Nokia later this year. The new service will be delivered via high-speed 3G network that the broadcaster is rolling out across Malaysia.
For the launch, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide MiTV's 018 mobile TV service with an end-to-end deployment process that includes implementation, integration and application development services. It will also maintain MiTV's infrastructure on a turnkey basis. Nokia is lending its N77 multimedia phones to the effort as well.
According to Kenneth Chang, executive director of MiTV Networks, his company chose the DVB-H standard because, unlike the IP-based services used by most other mobile TV delivery technologies, DVB-H is not based on packet-switching technology. This means, “there’s no streaming and lag associated with it,” he said.
