New documents offer OTA viewers help with VHF DTV reception issues

Over-the-air DTV viewers having trouble tuning in VHF Channels 2-13 have a new resource to help them identify and correct reception problems.

The FCC, working with TV industry groups, retailers and antenna manufacturers, has developed a new tip sheet to help viewers in selecting and using an antenna to overcome the problems that have plagued those living in some areas.

The tip sheet offers several suggestions, including:

  • Confirming the actual DTV channels on-air in a given locale;
  • Determining whether an indoor or outdoor antenna will work best;
  • Ensuring the antenna chosen is able to receive all of the DTV channels available in the area;
  • Selecting the right location for an indoor antenna;
  • When to use amplified antenna;
  • Understanding FM signals as potential interference; and
  • Connecting an indoor antenna to a converter box.

The content of the tips sheet and advisory document is based on the experience of broadcasters, antenna manufacturers and retailers in helping viewers resolve specific antenna-related reception problems.

“Informing consumers about the proper use of indoor antennas constitutes an important step in ensuring the American public can enjoy all the benefits of free, over-the-air digital television,” said Association for Maximum Service Television President David Donovan in a press statement accompanying the release of the documents.

The advisory and consumer tips sheets are available from several Web sites, including the FCC, NAB, MSTV, CEA and Consumer Electronics Retailers Coalition.
