MSNBC.com last week launched Multimedia on Mobile, a downloadable program allowing Windows Mobile smart phone users to view streamed video clips from the "Today" show and "NBC Nightly News."
Users can access the free application directly from the MSNBC.com interface on select Cingular, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless handsets or through the MSNBC.com Web site, which sends a text message link to the handset. Programming includes breaking news video, news headlines and stories, and popular MSNBC.com slide shows such as "The Week in Pictures" and "The Week in Sports." Other features include the ability to share articles and photos with friends via SMS and e-mail and a save folder to keep content for future reading.
MSNBC.com developed Multimedia on Mobile in partnership with Action Engine and uVuMobile. Supported solely by advertising, it is one of the first times that a U.S. broadcaster is offering premium news content for free. In a press statement issued announcing the launch, Dan Mucha, director of business strategy and development at MSNBC.com, said that while Multimedia on Mobile is currently only available directly to consumers, his company is exploring the possibility of partnering with carriers for distribution to subscribers.
