A German magazine has found a simple way to defeat copy protection built into HD-DVD and Blu-ray player software.
The magazine CT found that by pressing the Print Screen button on the computer keyboard it is possible to copy every frame of an HD movie. The process could be automated to circumvent having to manually hit the button for every frame in a movie.
Movie studios, fearing a repeat of the music industry’s experience with piracy, demanded security measures before releasing their content on high-definition formats. That led to the creation of copy protection systems, such as HDCP and AACS.
The latest edition of the magazine with coverage of the security slipup is due out this week.
