LiMo Foundation sees upswing in membership

The LiMo Foundation, formed to develop a Linux-based, open software platform for mobile devices, has experienced a recent surge in membership with 12 mobile industry players.

The new members include ARM, Broadcom, Ericsson, Innopath, KTF, MontaVista Software, NXP B.V., Aplix, Celunite, LG Electronics, McAfee and Wind River.

Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics and Vodafone formed the foundation this past January. Since then, members have been working on the development of the platform, focusing primarily on the joint development and marketing of an API specification and architecture, and supporting source code-based reference implementation components and tools.

The first handsets supporting the platform are expected to be ready for the market in the winter/spring of next year.
