LG Electronics to provide STBs for DIRECTV HD expansion

DIRECTV has selected LG Electronics to produce HD set-top boxes for customers to receive its MPEG-4 high-definition satellite broadcasts.

The satellite provider plans to expand its HD offerings when it begins delivering local broadcast channels in HD this fall. By 2007, DIRECTV plans to offer more than 1500 local broadcast channels and more than 150 national channels in HD.

LG’s set-top boxes will be sold under the DIRECTV name. They will offer DIRECTV’s program guide, and security and protected digital outputs (HDMI/HDCP) with simultaneous component/composite output, as well as a general-purpose LINUX-operating-system and USB port.
