Iowa Public Network selects Harris NetVX high-speed system

Iowa Public Television Network (IPTV), which operates an 18-station public television network in Iowa, has purchased Harris' NetVX high-speed network connectivity solution.

With the NetVX, the Iowa network will use its digital capacity to multicast several standard-definition channels during daytime hours including a children's channel.

With NetVX, the Iowa Public Television system will be able to provide programming from PBS as well as local and statewide material and data from a centralized location, reducing operating costs and helping IPTV better allocate its engineering resources. They’ll also use the system to distribute analog and digital content via fiber-optic lines and remotely monitor its transmitters, as well as send data services and back-monitoring programming.

The Iowa network will use its digital capacity to multicast several standard-definition channels during daytime hours including a children's channel, a lifelong learning channel and a channel for senior citizens, along with Web-generated material. According to Bill Hayes, director of engineering for IPTV, the network hopes to maximize its bandwidth use to provide more video and data services to viewers.
