Grupo Televisa deploys MPEG-4 systems for DSNG

Leading Mexican broadcaster Grupo Televisa has selected Envivio SD encoders and decoders for its digital satellite news gathering (DSNG) operations.

By deploying the MPEG-4 compression and decompression systems in news vans and fixed and flyaway configurations, Televisa enhanced image quality while requiring less than one half of the previous bit rate used for each transmission stream. Televisa recently used the Envivio encoders to broadcast the 2006 presidential election in Mexico and the FIFA World Cup in Germany.

Televisa is the largest media company in the Spanish-speaking world and is a major player in the international entertainment business. Its three national TV networks, Channels 2, 5 and 9, are composed of 225 stations nationwide and reach 99 percent of Mexico's TV households with 74 percent of the TV audience share.

Maintaining picture quality while lowering the bit rate was the key goal for Televisa in selecting MPEG-4 systems for news contribution feeds. With the Envivio systems, Televisa encodes at 2 Mb/s, providing considerable bandwidth savings over its previous MPEG-2 solution, which was operating at 5Mb/s. Currently, Televisa has deployed 40 of the Envivio broadcast series SD 4CasterB3 encoders and 10 4ViewD1 professional decoders.
