The FCC, seeking to add spectrum for a new generation of high-speed wireless data services, last week set rules that will permit the commercial use of a wide swath of new frequencies.
The action does not directly affect traditional television broadcasters working with standard broadcast spectrum, but does affect companies -especially cell phone providers - seeking to expand into new data services. The ruling provided service rules for the 1710-1755 MHz and 2110-2155 MHz spectrum bands.
The FCC said it would free a significant range of frequencies that had been reserved for the government so they can be used by private wireless companies. The commission will also conduct an auction to license the new frequencies to potential users.
