If the potential nine-fold increase in indecency fines weren't enough already, the FCC has increased the maximum penalty for other violations. Broadcasters and cable operators can expect to pay $32,500 per violation per day of a continuing violation, not to exceed $325,000. Common carriers can expect to pay $130,000 per violation, not to exceed $1.325 million. Others will be fined $11,000 per violation, not to exceed $97,000.
The Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 says that federal agencies must adjust maximum amounts for monetary penalties at least once every four years to reflect inflation. The last time the amount was raised was September 2000.
