Disney Pushing Blu-ray with 2-for-1 Sale

Walt Disney Studios, a major backer of the Blu-ray Disc format since the beginning of the war with HD DVD proponents, is quietly allowing some of its Blu-ray content to be sold on a 2-for-1 basis at several retail outlets in an effort to kick-start sales leading into the important holiday selling season, which kicks off (in America, at least) around Thanksgiving.

The deal for double Blu-ray content will likely last at least one full week (it began last weekend), and was being honored at most Best Buy and Circuit City outlets in the U.S., and online at Amazon.com, according to High-Def Digest.

Amazon.com appears to be offering some titles other than Disney’s on 2-for-1 basis, as well.

Available inventory differs from store to store, although some of the biggest movie titles of the past year are Disney titles—including “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto.” The 2-for-1 deal likely will continue at least through Saturday, Oct .20, or until the next-gen discs last.

No word yet on whether studios backing the HD DVD format may match the offer.
