Bush Signs Bill to Push Research, Technical Teaching

President Bush has signed into law a measure to increase investment in research and improve teaching of engineering, math and science.

Republican Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska praised the “America Competes Act.”

“By increasing our investment in basic research and the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, America is addressing the serious competitiveness challenges that it faces in today’s global economy,” he stated.

Stevens is vice chair of the Senate Commerce Committee. He co-sponsored the measure along with several other prominent members of both parties.
