Blu-ray Kicks Off Limited Disc Giveaway

On July 1, the Blu-ray Disc Association ramped up a previously announced promotion that will allow new owners of some Blu-ray Disc players to choose five free titles from a short list of available films. The offer does include new purchasers of the PlayStation 3 game console, which includes an internal Blu-ray drive.

The titles giveaway will extend through the end of October, with a list of fewer than two-dozen films being provided by most of the format’s studio proponents--including Sony, Warner, Paramount, Disney, Fox/MGM and Lionsgate, according to one of the Blu-ray group’s Web sites.

The list of available titles runs the gamut from well known to hardly known, including “Pearl Harbor,” “Babel,” “Black Rain,” “Hart’s War,” “Transporter 2” and “The Devil’s Rejects.” Participants are restricted in their overall choices because the titles have been organized into five categories--with only one choice allowed per category.

The eligible Blu-ray players qualifying for the offer include certain models listed on the Blu-ray savings Web site that are manufactured by Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, Philips and Matsushita (Panasonic).
