Best Buy launches fee-based video-sharing service

Best Buy has launched a new service for consumers to upload personal videos. The services is closed, advertising free, and uploaders pay a fee.

The retailer is targeting consumers who want their videos stored in a controlled and commercial-free environment. Subscriptions to Best Buy Video Sharing start at $6.97 for 100 minutes of video hosting and video lengths up to 30 minutes each. Premium plans are available for extended video lengths, additional video storage capacity, and other sharing features.

Best Buy has “seen an increase in customer demand for alternative video-sharing solutions,” Kevin Winneroski, a company vice president, told Online Media Daily. “Many customers, particularly families with children, don’t want their personal memories available for anyone to see in the public domain.”

Mydeo, a UK startup, is providing the technology for the new service.
