ABC stations to offer digital multicast

ABC’s 10 owned and operated television stations will offer multicast programming on their digital channels “in the near future,” said Walter Liss, president of the station group.

The decision comes after a year of experiments with multicasting technology on KFSN-TV, its Fresno, Calif., station. The station offered three programming streams including HDTV, local news/weather and public affairs. Liss, in a letter to the FCC, said ABC now plans to extend the multicast concept to its nine other markets, including Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.

Liss used the letter to plug “must carry,” urging the FCC to require cable operators to carry all of its DTV programming streams on local cable systems.
