YouTube Launches HD Content, Player

Because the vast majority of video found on YouTube is captured by amateur videographers, image quality has often taken a backseat to quantity, timeliness and subject matter. YouTube is trying to change some of that by dipping its “Web” feet into HD content (or as close to the resemblance of 720p as it can muster) with a section especially dedicated to HD content.

To aid in its new video-sharing venture, YouTube is also inaugurating its own media player to display 16:9 HD that is designed to show high-quality images at nearly full-monitor size. The ramp-up to HD was done without much fanfare when its “high quality” morphed into a “Watch in HD” option. (The ability to view even non-HD video in larger windows was also added within the past few weeks.)

YouTube has been concentrating on short-form news and music categories this fall, as well as full-length movie downloads—the vast majority of which are not yet offered in HD.
