WTVD adds Megawatt radar

WTVD in Raleigh-Durham, NC, is using a VHDD 1000-C Megawatt radar system. The radar, branded ABC 11 First Alert Doppler XP, was purchased from Baron Services in Huntsville, AL.

The radar, operating on 1 million watts, sits atop a 100ft tower in southeastern Wake County. It will be able to track storms with a new, higher level of precision and accuracy.

The radar’s pedestal is designed to rotate at up to six RPM — a speed that offers a fresh look at developing storm cells every 10 seconds. With 256 levels of color provided by sophisticated Doppler processing, viewers and meteorologists will better understand the intensity of storms moving through the area.
