Widevine protects content for Portugal's first IPTV deployment

Sonaecom has selected Widevine Technologies to provide content security technology for Hollywood programming now available on Portugal's first IPTV service, Clix SmartTV. The company is using Wildvine's Cypher Virtual SmartCard.

Portugal has one of the highest penetration rates of pay TV in southern Europe and 1.4 million broadband access lines. Sonaecom's national network reaches 50 percent of the population (1.6 million homes) in Portugal and now delivers multimedia content secured by Widevine to set-top boxes, PCs and mobile devices. Sonaecom is one of the first telcos in Portugal to deploy a GigE core network for supporting ultra-broadband services such as IPTV.

Clix SmarTV offers a complete lineup of broadcast television, VOD and subscription VOD with more than 100 channels and several entertainment packages. The service has been successfully deployed in both Lisbon and Porto.

Widevine provides downloadable content protection, forensic watermarking and digital copy protection solutions for more than 120 video service providers worldwide. This allows telco, Internet, mobile, cable and satellite service operators to generate new revenue opportunities through the secure distribution, identification and tracking of multimedia content.

Using a combination of downloadable conditional access, DRM and digital copy protection techniques, Widevine enables operators to acquire and distribute premium studio content and reduce video-related capital and operational expenditures.
