Via Licensing announces TV-anytime patent licensing terms

Via Licensing has announced the availability of terms for a multi-party license to patents essential for the implementation of the TV-Anytime Phase 1 interactive television standard (TVA-1 standard).

The TVA-1 standard was developed by the TV-Anytime Forum and is published by ETSI as: TS 102 822. The TVA-1 standard addresses the means by which consumers will be able to search, select, and acquire broadcast and online audiovisual content in a world of mobile devices and set-top boxes with mass storage capabilities, currently referred to as PVRs.

The joint patent license will better enable and encourage device manufactures to adopt the TVA-1 standard as it will greatly streamline the process and reduce the overall cost of obtaining the necessary licenses.

Six companies — Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), LG Electronics, NDS, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and Sharp Electronics — are currently discussing possible licensing terms. Once the six companies reach a consensus on the licensing terms, a joint patent license will be offered.
