Sony, JVC to Ramp up Hard-Drive HD Camcorders

Tapeless HD camcorders targeted to consumers with built-in hard drives will be shipped in the next few weeks to retailers from JVC and Sony, with others sure to follow later.

Fairly typical technical mistakes by an amateur user, such as recording over existing material using MiniDV tape, should be virtually eliminated, and rapid retrieval of scenes (similar to a digital still camera) is made easier, too, with nonlinear disc technology. Yet perhaps the biggest selling point of both new hard disc HD models is a "stunningly clear picture and sound," according to CNET.

According to a New York Times review, the JVC Everio GZ-HD7 can display video of equal sharpness (with less graininess, albeit less detail) than the competing Sony camcorder, the Handycam HDR-SR7.
