NTL Tests HD Services over ADSL2+ (as in DSL)

NTL Britain's biggest cable operator, is currently conducting trials of ADSL2+.

The trials--first started in February but not confirmed until this month--are targeted to providing Internet access download speeds of more than 18Mbps. The top tier of consumer broadband service currently available to NTL customers is about 3Mbps. Of particular note is that NTL also confirms that it is beta testing video-on-demand HD services on this platform. (ADSL is "asymmetric digital subscriber line.")

ADSL2+ runs over traditional copper wires that accompany NTL's coaxial cables. The company said DSL technologies such as ADSL2+ would allow it to avoid an enormously expensive "fiber to the home" build-out process and, instead, better use of its existing hardware network.
