New ownership rules go into effect Sept. 4 (sort of)

According to a previously scheduled chain of bureaucratic events, the FCC’s controversial new media ownership rules officially goes into effort Sept 4. The FCC directed in June that the rules would go into effect 30-days after official publication in the Federal Register. That publication occurred last week.

However, it’s all just a formality. The Office of Management and Budget has yet to approve new forms for applicants wishing to file under the new rules with the FCC. Also, with Congress standing a good chance of overturning the ownership rules or a court delaying them by fall, it’s highly unlikely the new policies will have any real effect in the immediate future.
