Nearly 100 million digital TVs to ship this year, says report

A newly released forecast and market data report showed that 68 million digital televisions were shipped last year and more than 97 million are expected to ship in 2007.

The data, part of "China Digital TV IC (Chip) Industry Report, 2006" from Frost & Sullivan, also revealed that worldwide shipments of digital televisions in the second quarter of 2006 reached 15.5 million, accounting for 37 percent of total TV shipments and 80 percent of total revenue.

The report also indicated strong demand for digital TV set-top boxes. In 2005, about 65 million set-top boxes were shipped worldwide. That figure is expected to grow to 79 million by 2009, according to the report.

The report also looked at IC components of digital television, and showed the price of the ATSC demodulator ICs to be relatively high — $52 versus a DVB-T demodulator IC component price of $46.
