House Committee to take up new DTV bill in fall

Rep. Billy Tauzin will try again in the fall to hold broadcasters to the 2006 analog shutoff date currently written into law. The Republican chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee said his latest package of proposed DTV legislation would be ready for consideration by early September.

Last year, it got a cool Congressional reception after Tauzin attempted to set a firm deadline for the broadcasters’ return of analog spectrum.

The new version of the legislation will cover a wide range of DTV issues including digital must-carry for cable, broadcast flag copy protection, cable set-top box specs and the obligation of broadcasters to protect network image quality.
