New Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski promised Congress during his nomination hearings that the agency would be more data-driven. Now he's asked newly appointed Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Analysis Director Paul de Sa to initiate a review of the FCC's data operations.
The point is to see whether the commission needs new data in certain areas and whether the way the agency collects data can be streamlined and used more efficiently — oh, and to learn these things within 60 days.
Through the review, the chairman hopes to uncover policy areas that are most data-intensive, how that data is used and what data comes from outside sources. Questions the review should answer are what gaps exist in the current ways the agency gathers data and whether there have been previous internal or external reviews of the commission's data collection and those findings.
