European Commission investigates possible anti-competitive practices

“The Wall Street Journal” reported July 3 that antitrust regulators from the European Commission (EC) have sent letters to Hollywood studios as part of an investigation into potential anticompetitive practices in the HD DVD format battle.

The article quoted a commission spokesman who confirmed that letters went out in mid-June to studios in an effort to determine if they had formed agreements to restrict the use of HD-DVD or Blu-ray discs.

According to the article, backers of the HD-DVD format have attempted to attract the attention of the commission to alleged anticompetitive practices of Blu-ray proponents.
