While the FCC DTV Web sites still refer to the Feb. 17 analog shutdown date, on Thursday evening, the EPA modified its Digital Television Transition Web page to show the June 12, 2009 date. The FCC Web site is technically correct, since as of Thursday night, the President had not signed the DTV Delay Act.
The EPA Digital Television Transition Web page provides information on how to recycle analog TV sets. It suggests extending the life of analog TV sets by purchasing a converter box and urges consumers to look for converter boxes with the Energy Star logo.
The site states that if all converter boxes sold in the United States were Energy Star-compliant, approximately 13 billion kilowatt hours and one billion dollars in energy costs could be saved during the useful lifespan of the devices. Also, greenhouse gas emission reduction equivalent to removing more than one million cars from the road could be realized.
