DVD players surpass VCRs in U.S. households

More U.S. households now own DVD players than VCRs, according to findings of the recent “Third Quarter Home Technology Report” from Nielsen Media Research.

According to Nielsen Media Research, 81.2 percent of all households now own DVD players, while 79.2 percent own VCRs. The study also found that ownership of most media technology tends to be up from previous years.

As of third quarter 2006, DVD penetration in the United States is up 6 percent from the previous year and continues to grow, while VCR penetration has started to decline. In 1999, when Nielsen first started tracking DVD ownership in its Home Tech Report, DVD penetration at 6.7 percent was dwarfed by VCR ownership at 88.6 percent.
