Companies support WirelessHD

A group of major electronics companies has come together in a special interest group to develop wireless HD and data transmission. The group includes LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic), NEC Corporation, Samsung Electronics, SiBeam, Sony and Toshiba.

Called WirelessHD, the group is developing a specification to transfer HD multimedia material using an unlicensed frequency band at 60GHz. Use of the band will allow transmission of uncompressed HD video and data at rates of up to 5Gb/s and over distances of up to 30ft.

The technology is being developed for HDTV receivers and other audiovisual devices, both fixed location and portable. WirelessHD said it planned to complete the specifications in spring 2007.
