Canada: HD Subs Approaching One-Third Million Mark

In its recent Broadcasting Policy Monitoring Report, the Canadian Radio Television Commission (CRTC) said there are now more than 321,000 subscribers to discretionary HD services in Canada. There are more than 11.5 million Canadian households. Thus, the percentage of HD dwellings, while growing, is still somewhat less than 3 percent.

However, Digital Home Canada online said actual HD sub figures are probably higher than announced because the CRTC's numbers are restricted to cable and DBS firms with at least 20,000 subs. (MSOs with fewer than 20,000 homes are not required to report such information.)

Among the top half-dozen cable and satellite providers, the largest HD distributors include ExpressVu and Rogers (which offer 27 and 26 HD stations, respectively). Coming in third is Cogeco, which currently offers 19 HD channels.
