Average U.S. adult spends $1200 annually on consumer electronics

The average adult in America spends $1200 annually on consumer electronics, according to a new study from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

The association's "9th Annual Household and Teen CE Ownership and Market Potential Study" found that the top five growth sectors for consumer electronics were:

  • digital video recorders (DVRs);
  • network routers or hubs;
  • MP3 players;
  • cable modems;
  • digital cameras.

HDTV is also a category with significant growth. To date, HD televisions are in a quarter of all U.S. homes, the association said. Additionally, the number of U.S. homes with DVD players has reached 84 percent.

According to the study, the five most-owned consumer electronics products include televisions (92 percent); DVD players, recorders and/or VCRs (82 percent), cordless phones (82 percent); and cellular phones (76 percent).
