RCTV transforms news workflow to file-based, tapeless environment

Radio Caracas Television (RCTV) this summer became the first broadcaster in Venezuela to go on-air with a tapeless end-to-end digital newsroom.

On July 18, viewers of RCTV saw for the first time the news product of the digital news infrastructure based on Avid Technology file-based news production technology used to edit stories, share and store content and manage media.

In March, the Venezuelan broadcaster committed more that $1 million to the new digital news environment. According to RCTV vice president Edgardo Mosca, transforming news operations to a tapeless, file-based workflow has saved time and money. The Avid installation is “the cornerstone” of the transformation.

In constructing its new production facility, RCTV replaced its older Newstar systems with the Avid iNEWS newsroom automation solution with the iNEWS ControlAir system. It added 15 Avid NewsCutter XP systems, five of which use Avid Mojo; 13 AirSpeed servers, which are used for ingest and playout; and an Avid Unity for News system with MediaManager, including 2.88TB of storage for managing and sharing media assets. RCTV uses the systems in three studios within its news production center.
