New Crawford master control integrates IT, legacy video

The DST master control integration project at Crawford Communications encompasses legacy video equipment and new IT-based solutions to deliver improved workflow.

Systems integrator Digital System Technology (DST) recently completed a comprehensive integration project at Crawford Communications in Atlanta that follows the growing trend of merging IT technology with legacy broadcast operations.

DST provided turnkey system design and integration services for an automated, server-based, multi-channel master control system in a central area of the 135,000sq. ft. facility, supported by a data-based hierarchical storage management system.

The result is ENCOMPASST (Encode, Manage and Protect your Assets), Crawford's terminology for its fully digital storage, archive and asset management system. The ENCOMPASS concept promotes a far more efficient operation for Crawford's 34 network origination clients and multiple satellite turnaround networks.

The bulk of DST's integration work was tied to IT equipment from Masstech (storage), SGI and Omneon (ingest and playout servers), Omnibus Systems (automation), SpectraLogic (data tape robotic systems) and Barco (monitoring systems).
