NAB2006 to offer insight into digital ENG, SNG

The NAB2006 Engineering Conference April 27 will focus on digital electronic newsgathering and satellite newsgathering.

The program will include:

  • IP over ENG/SNG, presented by Michael Payne, vice president, Marketing and Business Development, Microwave Radio Communications. This paper will examine how the use of multi carrier COFDM combined with the re-application of existing single carrier QAM terrestrial modulation techniques can achieve higher bit rates to accommodate HD contribution.
  • A Proposal for the Use of Edges of Ku Band Transponder for First Strike News Gathering, presented by Guy Bouchard, senior manager, broadcast and signal transport, CBC. This paper will examine using a “previously forbidden area” of the Ku-band satellite transponder to provide up to 2Mb/s payload.
  • 2GHz Relocation Panel Discussion. The one-hour discussion will offer an update on the effort, present lessons learned to date and answer the questions of broadcasters. Panelist will include Andy Bater, director of RF systems engineering for Tribune Broadcasting; Michael Degitz, Sprint Nextel vice president for spectrum development; Dane Ericksen, senior engineer, Hammet & Edison; and David Layne, KCNC-TV director of broadcast operations and engineering.

The digital SNG and ENG sessions will be presented at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Room S219/S220.
