When the power's out, mobile TV steps up to a public safety role

When we think of mobile TV, we think about entertainment. But, during a disaster — when the electricity is likely to be out — mobile TV can be a lifesaver. That's what Anthony Rose, an Australian tourist staying at Mumbai's Taj Hotel during last week's terrorist attack, discovered.

In an interview with CNN, Rose described his experiences during that horrific Wednesday night, hiding in his room from the terrorists who were hunting down Western tourists and taking them hostage. With the power out, how did Rose know to hide and not answer the door or phone? He was watching CNN on his iPhone.

As mobile TV becomes more pervasive, count on seeing more serendipitous uses for the third screen.
