More than a million DTV tuners sold

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) says that more than 1.2 million over-the-air digital television (DTV) tuners have been sold factory-to-dealer since the product came to market at the close of 1998. DTV tuners are necessary to receive over-the-air DTV broadcast signals (ATSC) and may be purchased as stand-alone set-top boxes or embedded within a DTV set.

The CEA also reported that manufacturer-to-dealer sales of video products totaled 3,663,709 units for the month of January, an increase of 25 percent compared to the same time period in 2003. TV/DVD combinations, DVD players, camcorders and digital television (DTV) products were among the digital video products that continued to demonstrate increased sales growth.

Manufacturer-to-dealer shipments of direct-view and rear projection DTV products alone increased by 75 percent, compared to the same period in 2003, with shipments totaling 263,697 units for the month of January. Factory-to-dealer sales of TV/DVD combinations totaled125,723 units for the month of January, representing an increase of 210 percent compared to the same period in 2003, while sales of DVD players increased by nearly 40 percent with unit sales totaling 1,111,285.
