Unit sales for flat-panel HDTVs in North America grew by 27 percent in December over November’s sales despite sales of plasma displays losing ground, Pacific Media Associates said last week.
The global display market watcher’s Consumer Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service also showed that consumers gravitated toward buying larger models.
LCD displays already dominated the market below 45in, but in December, they captured 50 percent of the 50in-54in segment, said Pacific Media VP Rosemary Abowd. Plasma unit shares dropped to 17 percent in December, which is its lowest point in the history of the Pacific Media sample, she added.
The average street price for all units sold in December in the report sample declined by 1 percent from the November average. It appears consumers took advantage of lower prices to step up to larger screen sizes than they bought in November, according to the Pacific Media study.
Samsung had seven of the top 10 best-selling models in December, including the top selling LNT4661F 1080p 46in LCD HDTV with an average price of $1,531, down 15 percent from its November price. This helped drive Samsung to the top spot in both unit shares with 29.6 percent and revenue shares with 32.2 percent, according to the study.
