Harris, LG Electronics submit MPH details as part of ATSC standardization process

Harris and LC Electronics in mid-October submitted technical details of their MPH in-band mobile digital television technology to the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) as part of its standards-setting process.

Presented in the format for ATSC Candidate Standard, the MPH in-band mobile DTV documentation explains the detailed architecture of the modulation system’s capabilities to provide over-the-air DTV signals to mobile, pedestrian and handheld devices.

MPH engineers and executives from Harris and LG Electronics U.S. R&D subsidiary Zenith have actively participated in the accelerated ATSC standard-making process since early summer.

The 80-plus-page document on the MPH transmission/modulation technologies not only discloses all the technical details of the MPH system’s multi-program capabilities, but also includes extensive descriptive information to understand, evaluate and appreciate its features.

An additional portion of the submission describes two candidate systems — Neural-Extended Adaptive-Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB+) and High-Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC-v2) — for efficient delivery of compressed audio for monaural, stereo and surround-sound to handheld and rear-seat MPH consumer products.

The MPH system uses MPEG-4 H.264 video compression standard as its video codec. Choice of this codec is consistent with other standardized implementations of mobile television worldwide.

The MPH proponents also submitted documents supporting a subsequent choice for the management layer by technically detailing two approaches, one using the current ATSC MPEG transport stream and the other using IP.
