The FCC is considering a $550,000 fine for Viacom’s Super Bowl halftime show. The broadcaster may be fined because it allowed a brief view of Janet Jackson’s bare breast to be viewed by the unsuspecting public during the Super Bowl.
FCC staff members came up with the number and have proposed that the commissioners fine the 20 CBS television stations Viacom owns and operates $27,500 each, for a total of $550,000, for airing the live, uncensored telecast. The recommendation does not recommend fining the other CBS stations that aired the half time entertainment show.
The proposal is circulating among the five FCC commissioners, who could approve the Enforcement Bureau’s recommendation, reject it or modify it.
