The FCC moved May 31 to ensure consumers in multi-unit buildings benefit from increased competition in phone and video service offerings.
The commission removed barriers to competitive entry in multi-unit buildings where a new service provider wishes to compete against an existing provider. New companies entering the video services and telephony markets should not be prevented from competing for consumers in multi-unit buildings based on industry practices.
The move clarifies that companies providing competitive video services must not be forced to cut through sheet rock to connect their wiring to cable home wiring in dwellings. Wiring behind sheet rock is “physically inaccessible” for the purposes of the rules.
