Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America and Sharp have inked an agreement to license LG Electronics/Zenith's 8-VSB technology. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Zenith developed the digital transmission system for the ATSC DTV standard. The "FCC DTV Tuner Mandate" that took effect last year requires that DTV tuners with 8-VSB demodulators be incorporated in half of 36-inch and larger TV sets sold in the United States. By July 1, 2005, all 36-inch and large sets and 50 percent of 25- to 35-inch sets sold in the United States will need to have the tuners. The mandate will apply to 13-inch and larger sets by 2007.
