NCTA Wages Summertime Battle With Signal Theft

The National Cable and Telecommunications Association designated July 1-5 as the cable industry's inaugural Signal Theft Awareness Week, described as a nationwide effort to draw attention to the impact of signal theft on local communities and consumers, with a particular focus on "passive" theft, or theft through the unauthorized reception of a signal. The campaign will feature public service announcements about receiving cable dishonestly, and encourage cable operators to conduct regular system-wide audits to check for homes that may be receiving cable for free.
NCTA research indicates that millions of U.S. homes may be receiving cable service without paying for it, resulting in more than $6 billion a year in unrealized revenue for cable systems and network; and the volume of lost revenues and cost of monitoring signal theft adds cost to the industry.
