Toshiba America Consumer Products is joining the ranks of companies that license Zenith's 8-VSB DTV technology. Zenith--a subsidiary of LG Electronics--holds patents related to the production of over-the-air digital television receivers compliant with the ATSC DTV standard. The terms of the license agreement were not disclosed.
As of July 1, 2004, the FCC started requiring 8-VSB tuners in nearly all TVs. The transition will last three years and the tuner is currently being required in 50 percent of 36-inch and larger TV sets.
