'M:I 3' Sets HD Disc Sales Record (Sort of)

If the truth be known, it's not much of a record to be broken to begin with, but all good things come in due course and Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible 3" seems to be on track to sell the most combined Blu-ray and HD DVD discs than any other title since both incompatible next-gen formats first started appearing several months ago.

About 20,000 units of HD DVD and Blu-ray of the movie were sold in its first week on shelves, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (There were no number breakouts available for each format.) Yet to put things in perspective, the first-week sales among standard DVD discs of the same title topped 3.7 million units.

Next-gen DVD players and discs are not expected to sell well during the upcoming holiday season.
