The FCC's chairman has a favorite new toy: Digital video recorder, Tivo.
Never underestimate the power of a new toy. FCC Chairman Michael Powell, a man who will hold immense power over deciding the consumer’s right to record digital television programming, is now a TiVo owner.
“My favorite product that I got for Christmas is TiVo,” Powell revealed during a question and answer session at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. “TiVo is God's machine.”
The FCC chairman said he intended to use his new TiVo to record TV shows to play on other television sets in his home, and suggested that he might share recordings with his sister if she were to miss a favorite show.
One wonders what Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association, who would normally label someone a video pirate for making such a statement, would have to say about this. So far he has remained mum.
