As HD-quality closed-circuit TV security systems for both live and recorded surveillance begin replacing older non-HD systems across the United Kingdom and Europe, HD is being seen as a “major watershed” for the capability factors of all future CCTV systems.

Security trending now points to a high likelihood that HD CCTV “will become the de facto standard for CCTV users and providers over the next few years,” according to Info4security, a British security systems Web site.

In the 1990s, CCTV moved from analog to digital technology, and the foothold by HD into CCTV now “parallels the experience in the consumer electronics market,” according to Info4security. The firm cites a couple of obvious reasons for HD’s benefits in the security realm: delivery of more detailed images than pre-HD (especially for face and other recognition models used by banks and other highly secured sectors); and the nonlinear storage and retrieval capabilities over linear systems (which also held true for non-HD digital CCTV).
