SAN JOSE, Calif.,—Harmonic has announced that the Colombian telecommunications provider Claro Colombia is using technologies from Harmonic for its new Claro Box TV streaming service. 

Claro Colombia has deployed Harmonic's VOS Cloud-Native Software solution along with the company's software-based Electra X live video processor and the MediaGrid shared storage system. Harmonic reported. 

"With the launch of Claro Box TV, we are the first service provider in Colombia to implement an Android TV service," said Walter Borda, innovation corporate director at Claro Colombia. "Claro Box TV is a revolutionary leap forward in streaming experience: our subscribers can enjoy traditional linear channels as well as start-over and catch-up TV, cloud DVR, remote control voice assistant, third-party streaming services, and more than 300 applications from the Google Play Store."

The companies noted that Harmonic’s VOS Cloud-Native Software increases Claro Colombia's business agility while ensuring an exceptional quality of experience for subscribers of the new Android TV-based service.

By running the VOS software in a private data center with easy access to the public cloud, Claro Colombia can stream its entire channel lineup for a one-stop-shop, app-based streaming experience, Harmonic said. 

An essential part of the turnkey solution is Harmonic's EyeQ AI-based encoding technology, which improves streaming performance and lowers overall streaming and storage costs. Additionally, Harmonic's team of DevOps experts provides 24/7 monitoring and assistance to ensure the highest service availability for Claro Box TV, Harmonic said.

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Harmonic is rolling out a new release of its VOS SaaS platforms and cloud-native softwares, with features specifically aimed at live video streaming and broadcast delivery.

First up in what Harmonic is calling its summer offering is the VOS360 live streaming platform. This unit now offers 1+1 geo-redundancy for uninterrupted streaming; the ability to manage peak viewing by utilizing multi-CDN and caching capabilities; support for Google Ad Manager and FreeWheel ad management platforms; and reduced latency with Apple Low-Latency HLS protocol support.

Then there is the VOS360 channel origination and distribution platform. This reduces infrastructure costs with statmux support in the cloud and simplifies cloud playout workflows via new partnerships for traffic management and playout automation, including Aveco, Crispin/Sony and Florical.

The VOS cloud-native software, meanwhile, provides performance boost and density gains with Intel Xeon scalable processors. It also allows for high CPU savings through a range of video-quality encoding figurations and deploys broadcast statmux capabilities and CAS vendor integrations on the same stack.

SAN JOSE, CALIF.—With the integration of several Thomson Video Networks technologies, Harmonic reports that it has grown its VOS software-based media processing offerings.

The additions to Harmonic’s VOS family include rebranded Thomson Video equipment like the renamed Electra VS broadcast and multiscreen encoder (formerly ViBE VS7000), Electra XT Xtream high-density transcoder (formerly ViBE XT1000) and Spectrum XE playout system (formerly FUZE-1). All of these technologies are powered by the VOX Flex.

All of Harmonic’s VOS offerings feature the Harmonic PURE Compression Engine, a software-based encoding and transcoding technology that delivers video quality and low bitrates. PURE provides support for a range of formats, codecs and encoding schemes for all OTT services. It offers MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and HEVC codecs, as well as SD, HD and UHD content formats.
