LAS VEGAS—VidOvation has announced that the company is investing in additional Haivision products for its rental offering to satisfy increasing customer demand for live REMI (Remote Integration) and at-home production solutions.

With the Haivision Pro video transmitter, mobile encoders, and Haivision StreamHub advanced receiver and distribution platform, VidOvation can provide video transport for live sports productions, newsgathering, reality TV, and other live event productions, the companies said.

In addition, VidOvation also offers carrier-agnostic e-SIMs with domestic and global support of 4G LTE and 5G cellular networks.

"VidOvation has almost a decade of experience with the Pro transmitters and StreamHub," said Jim Jachetta, executive vice president and chief technology officer, VidOvation. "VidOvation originally launched these products to the North American market for Aviwest before the acquisition by Haivision last year. Our customers appreciate the depth of this experience, and that they're not just getting gear from us, they're getting 24/7 technical support, the know-how, and professional level consultations on simplifying their live production workflows."

The Haivision Pro deployed with VidOvation e-SIMs can automatically connect up to eight cellular modems to the best local cellular networks, such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, the companies said.

That means customers no longer need to swap out SIMs for an alternate carrier if a carrier is unavailable in a particular area or region. Instead, the VidOvation e-SIMs automatically switch to the best available cellular network in real time, the company said.

VidOvation provides cellular connectivity in more than 120 countries around the world.

"VidOvation has been providing customers at-home and REMI production capabilities since 2016. The technology took off during the pandemic, and it's not slowing down," said Jachetta. "The Haivision solution has enabled multicamera capture of live content at remote locations with management and production from a centralized main studio or control room. It makes perfect sense regarding efficiency, workflow simplicity, and cost savings. Many people adopted these at-home production workflows because, at the time, they had to. Now, it's their preferred option."

ANAHEIM, Calif.—VidOvation has launched a new Technology-as-a-Service (TaaS) offering that will allow qualified customers access to any product line VidOvation carries — including top sellers like Haivision/AVIWEST, VISLINK, CyanView, MultiDyne, and IP television distribution and signage systems — through monthly payments over a 36-month or 60-month subscription term.

The TaaS offering includes everything customers can see in a traditional solution, including installation, hardware, software, full-term maintenance, and obsolescence protection, without upfront costs, VidOvation said.

"At VidOvation, we want to be your long-term trusted advisor — and TaaS helps us do just that," said Jim Jachetta, executive vice president and chief technology officer, VidOvation. "Customers who use the new TaaS offering no longer need to worry about getting locked into the wrong technology or being forced to divert a large portion of their budgets away from other necessary business expenses. With TaaS, we will guide you at every step, from finding the technology that best fits your needs to performing all maintenance to advising you several years down the line — when your needs change and there are new technologies better-suited to your operation."

VidOvation stressed that there are key differences between TaaS and a traditional lease. First, nearly all lease options are designed to or end up in ownership. With TaaS, there is no option for ownership, which customers may find it far more compelling because they will be able to avoid spending a large portion of their net revenue on nonrecoverable costs like labor, installation, and training.

The second difference is that TaaS financially protects customers from technology obsolescence and includes secured maintenance pricing for the term, which typically doesn't exist in a traditional lease. VidOvation's new TaaS offering includes both, the company said.

With maintenance, service, and an extended warranty included as part of the subscription, VidOvation will treat each component like a rental and is therefore required to repair or replace. VidOvation will offer proactive checkups and concierge services supported by traditional service-level provisions. VidOvation's ongoing service agreements are now part of the monthly subscription, even for most failure situations. This removes the burden of additional service expenses for customers throughout the subscription term. This new TaaS program will even absorb the deductible on the insurance should the equipment be harmed by a natural disaster, the company said.

For more information about the new TaaS solution visit https://www.vidovation.com/taas.

ANAHEIM, Calif.—VidOvation is broadening its live video distribution network and cloud and edge computing capabilities and is rolling out carrier-agnostic e-SIMs with domestic and global support for 3G, 4G LTE and 5G cellular networks, the company said.

The company’s live video transport, distribution and streaming services now take full advantage of high-quality and robust transport services of AWS Elemental MediaConnect. AWS Elemental MediaConnect enables mission-critical live video workflows for less money and faster than satellite or fiber services.

VidOvation has fully integrated the AVIWEST Cloud StreamHub with AWS Cloud MediaConnect. With the StreamHub bonded cellular receiver, decoder, transcoder and streaming, hub users can receive transmissions from various types of field encoders and transmitters, enabling quick, easy and simultaneous sharing of high-quality live content with multiple affiliates or other broadcast facilities, it said.

The integration is made possible by StreamHub software with support for up to 16 IP inputs and 16 IP outputs supporting IP protocols, such as SRT, NDI, RTMP, TS over IP, HLS, and others. In addition, StreamHub is vendor-agnostic and universally compatible with third-party encoders and transmitters, the company said.

Further simplifying remote production, VidOvation has rolled out carrier-agnostic domestic and global e-SIMs, providing simple, intelligent and global connectivity for the company's complete family of bonded cellular and streaming products. Leveraging a Multi-IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) technology, VidOvation aggregates regional and local carrier cellular connectivity. The advanced e-SIM cards are agnostic to the device and agnostic to the cellular carrier, and they do not require any configuration, it said.

The flagship AVIWEST PRO380 deployed with VidOvation e-SIMs, as well as other bonded cellular transmitters, can automatically connect its eight cellular modems to the best local cellular networks such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, it said.

Users no longer need to swap out SIMs for an alternate carrier if a given carrier is unavailable in a particular area or region. Instead, the VidOvation e-SIMs automatically switch in real time to the best available cellular network. VidOvation provides cellular connectivity in more than 120 countries around the world, the company said.

More information is available on the company’s website.

LAKE FOREST, Calif.—VidOvation has announced that the company has reached an agreement to represent Simplylive, a provider of remote live production workflow solutions, instant replay, and official/coaching review replay.

The addition of Simplylive to its portfolio will expand VidOvation's turnkey solutions for cloud-based, remote integration production (REMI), particularly for live sports broadcasts.

The integration of VidOvation's bonded cellular and wireless system with Simplylive's modern, forward-thinking ViBox remote production architecture enables fully remote productions, increasing productivity and affordability by allowing operators to produce multiple shows or games without being on-site, the companies said. This provides for better health and safety and reduces travel, shipping, and venue costs while maintaining the highest-quality production.

"Simplylive's remote production expertise solves the challenge of effective, affordable cloud-based production for live events," said Jim Jachetta, executive vice president and chief technology officer, VidOvation. "All of us — broadcasters, sports leagues, producers — rose to the challenge during the pandemic and were able to develop and deliver workable remote production solutions almost overnight. Now it's a matter of refining and perfecting those solutions. Simplylive helps us take it to the next level with scalable REMI technology that allows the production infrastructure to be onsite, remote, or in the cloud, giving production teams the ultimate flexibility to work from anywhere."

Simplylive's ViBox All-In-One is a flexible total production tool for multicamera programs of all sizes, the companies said. The smart, touch-screen user interface is simple to learn and operate, allowing a single operator to run a complete production on one touch screen. With ViBox, the servers are located with the cameras at the venue, while operators run the touch-screen controls from any remote location, delivering huge savings in production costs.

The ViBox is available in a number of configuration sizes, from the ViBox Micro A-I-O for single camera productions with integrated graphics and audio, to the ViBox 16 A-I-O with a 12-input switcher that integrates SloMo, graphics, and audio.

"VidOvation has been instrumental in creating the REMI-style at-home live production model," said Simplylive vice president of sales and operations Gregory Macchia. "With its experience in developing and deploying innovative live production solutions, VidOvation will provide our shared customers with valuable guidance and support in implementing more efficient, cost-saving, safe, and robust solutions for live production."

More information about VidOvation is online at www.vidovation.com/at-home-remi-live-video-production/.

Further information about Simplylive is online at www.simplylive.tv.

IRVINE, Calif.—VidOvation has announced a deal with CyanView to represent the camera control system supplier in the United States.

The agreement calls on VidOvation to supply turnkey solutions for remote IP-based camera control and shading over unmanaged networks like the internet and cell networks during live multicamera productions, such as sports, VidOvation said.

"CyanView solves the challenge of efficient, unified remote camera control and shading during live production, and we're pleased to represent the company's products in the U.S. market," said Jim Jachetta, executive vice president and chief technology officer of VidOvation.

"Modern productions rely on a variety of specialty cameras, including mini POV, PTZ, robotic, ENG, large-sensor cinema and more. Camera control and shading for these cameras is challenging over unmanaged IP networks, such as the public internet and cellular, but CyanView technology eliminates any challenges associated with latency and intermittent connectivity, making camera control possible over thousands of miles for REMI and at-home production."

Integrating VidOvation’s bonded cellular and wireless system with CyanView’s RCP multicamera control panel provides for reliable, low-latency IP-based transmission of control signals from multiple camera types and brands to live production control rooms. It simplifies remote operations and reduces costs, VidOvation said.

CyanView's RCP camera control supports tally, pan-tilt head and gimbal control as well as motorized lenses. It offers video correction and video transport from a single system. Users can remotely control all stages of the ecosystem from a unified interface. Integration with bonded cellular and wireless technology enables IP-based signal transport, putting these control capabilities at the fingertips of engineers working remotely in production or master control.

More information is available on the VidOvation website.

STUDIO CITY, CALIF.—My wife and I started 44 Blue back in 1984, and it has been a great journey. We’ve been part of the evolving reality TV genre over the past three decades, making a name for 44 Blue by developing and producing non-scripted shows for cable networks such as Discovery, A&E and The History Channel.

In 2019, we partnered with the legendary Dick Wolf to produce “First Responders Live” for Fox. It was one of the biggest projects we’ve ever done.

“First Responders Live” was among the first live shows to tackle coverage of all three agencies—firefighters, police officers and EMS technicians and first responders—and the challenge was steep. We had done live shows before, but never on a scale like this, with so many field crews working in so many cities, and then all of the in-studio work. We thought we had seen it all, but this was brand new for us.

EXTENDING OUR REACH

To create the right formula for the show in terms of equipment and signal flow, we mapped out all the different cameras and transmissions. (It looked like the chalkboard scene from “A Beautiful Mind.”) We did our research in selecting the right transmission gear and provider. By far, VidOvation and Aviwest stood out because of their experience and proven track record with this type of live project.

During production we filmed in as many as 10 cities in an evening, and in each city we had six to eight cameras rolling live—some handheld, others fixed-rig. Aviwest PRO380 mobile video transmitters mounted on various HD cameras allowed us to take advantage of H.265/HEVC encoding, which ensured great video quality with low data requirements and low latency.

Using bonded cellular technology, the PRO380 transmitters combined available network interfaces to create reliable video-transmission links to our control room at TV City in Los Angeles. Aviwest Stream-Hub transceiver, decoder, and distribution platforms in our control room allowed us to receive all those simultaneous live broadcast-quality video feeds in perfect frame-accurate genlock and lip-sync.

The VidOvation team had given our crews and camera operators tutorials on what to expect and on potential issues they needed to be aware of.

SHOWTIME

As many as 40 concurrent feeds are delivered to the control room, which are received by more than 10 StreamHub transceiver, decoder and distribution platforms and delivered live on air.

“The technology offered us the ability to go where the action took us, which was key to capturing and highlighting the incredible work of the first responders featured in the show,” said Mark Hamaguchi, vice president of production management for 44 Blue Productions.

“First Responders Live” is produced by Fox Entertainment, Wolf Entertainment and 44 Blue Production

The integration enables an end-to-end IPTV system with DirecTV, digital rights management, video on-demand and digital video recording with streaming to smartphones, tablets, desktop players, displays, smart TVs and set-top boxes.

Aviwest products that will be set up at the booth include the Safe Streams Transport protocol, Pro3 and Air series and the Pro380 HEVC bi-directional video uplink system. The SST protocol aggregates multiple IP links and features new functionalities for live video production and distribution like data hotspot, remote control, video return and an intercom. Each of the Pro3 and Air series products will also be shown with new hot folder and high-speed data hotspot feature incorporated. The offerings are rounded out with the latest generation of the Pro380 portable video uplink system with H.265/HEVC bonded cellular encoder and transmitter.

Another VidOvation client that will be in the booth is ABonAir and its Wireless Teleprompter and Video Return system. The mobile wireless system is based around the usage of the same single link that incorporates a teleprompter, video return, CCU and intercom so a crew can use all the functions of a wireless camera like a wired camera. This includes latency delays reduced to 7 milliseconds for live content or multicamera productions.

V-Nova also has a presence at the show, touting its PPro AI-powered software library for encoding and decoding SMPTE VC-6. There will also be the P+, a software library for encoding and decoding enhanced video streams with MPEG-5 part two, otherwise known as low-complexity video enhancement coding (LCEVC).

Meanwhile, AlphaEye will bring its real-time, wide-angle lens distortion corrector to fix distortion and curvilinear perspective errors.

VidOvation will be located at booth N265 during the NAB Show New York.

IRVINE, Calif.—Following paramedics and first responders as they respond to calls, Big Fish Entertainment uses VidOvation’s AVIWEST bonded cellular system to assist with its transmission of live footage for the A&E show “Live Rescue.” Featuring PRO180 transmitters and StreamHub transceivers, AVIWEST allows for transmission of low-latency, broadcast-quality video and audio from multiple cameras and multiple locations.

Big Fish deploys the PRO180 transmitters in the field with HD cameras. When capturing the images, the units’ bonded cellular technology combines available network interfaces to create video transmission links. The PRO units feed the live video back to the control room in New York, where the StreamHub transceiver, decoder and distribution platform receives them and delivers them to air.

Big Fish Entertainment previously used the AVIWEST setup for “Live PD,” a similar type of show on A&E. The company says that the equipment has helped create a “singular viewing experience for the audience.”

Designed for real-time delivery of live UHD or HD content over unmanaged IP networks, the AVIWEST half-RU encoder combines 10 bit and 4:2:2 HEVC encoding with the latest generation of AVIWEST SafeStreams technology. VidOvation will demonstrate the HE4000 with the latest AVIWEST StreamHub transceiver and decoder model. In addition, the HE4000 can be combined with the AVIWEST QUAD CellLink active antenna for video encoding and IP distribution over cellular networks. Two QUAD CellLink active external wideband cellular antennas can be plugged into the HE4000’s USB ports.

Now representing ABonAir products in the U.S., VidOvation will include the company’s AB512 wireless video link as part of its display. The AB512 is built on a bidirectional radio channel between transmitter and receiver, which allows the device to acknowledge the correct acceptance of each group of pixels. Other features include the capability to reduce latency to a seven-millisecond delay for live event coverage and multi-camera productions, and an RF spectrum analyzer that automatically selects and hops to the best RF channel; there is also a manual channel selection option.

VidOvation TV is another item set for the show. The IPTV and digital signage system now includes full integration with DirecTV COM3000 system, enabling an end-to-end IPTV system that features 138 supported channels of DirecTV, digital rights management, video on demand and digital video recording with streaming to smartphones, tablets, desktop, displays, smart TVs and set-top boxes.

Another AVIWEST branded product is expected, the PRO380 series HEVC bi-directional video uplink. The system has a H.265/HEVC bonded cellular encoder and transmitter for bandwidth savings to live remote video production.

There will also be demonstrations of the Antelope camera systems, mini cameras with high-speed imaging technology for sports and live event production. The Antelope Femto, Antelope Nano and Antelope Ultra 4K are 2K and 4K HDR broadcast cameras, while the Antelope Pico can capture slow-motion perspectives at 350 fps in native HD, while simultaneously outputting a 1080p50/60 signal via HD-SDI.

VidOvation will be located at booth C3205 throughout the show. Since the AB512 reduces latency to a 7-millisecond delay for live, multi-camera productions, crews no longer need to worry that unacceptable lag times will result in lip sync or other operational issues.

MOJO

The system features an RF spectrum analyzer, which automatically selects and hops to the best RF channel cleanly, while the manual channel selection option is useful for coordinating frequencies at large events.

VidOvation will also demo Aviwest’s HE4000 4K UHD HEVC live encoder, which enables real-time UHD/HD video contribution and distribution over the internet. The half-RU encoder combines 10-bit and 4:2:2 HEVC encoding with Aviwest’s latest SafeStreams technology to deliver live video over IP at low latencies and bit rates, saving on satellite costs.

With Aviwest’s Quad Modem active antenna—which has four internal cellular modems with a high-efficiency, wideband antenna array—the HE4000 enables 4K and multi-HD HEVC video encoding and IP distribution. And two Quad Modem active external wideband cellular antennas can be plugged into the HE4000's USB ports for bonded cellular transmission.

Aviwest’s DMNG APP mobile journalism (MOJO) solution now offers bonded live streaming, storage and forwarding of high-quality live video, as well as advanced camera settings like focus, exposure and white balance, video clip editing and transmission over bonded 3G/4G and Wi-Fi connections in seconds, to get news stories to air faster.

The 2018 NAB Show takes place in Las Vegas, April 9-12.
NEW YORK—Premiering last October on A&E, “Live PD” offers viewers a live, unfettered and unfiltered look inside America’s busiest police departments and the communities they patrol. “Live PD” is the first show of its kind to capture and stream live video of police officers on patrol, using bonded cellular technology with dash cams as well as fixed-rig and handheld cameras.

As the creators and the production company behind “Live PD,” we at Big Fish Entertainment faced challenges in developing the show. One of the biggest hurdles—the whole premise of “Live PD”—was the ability to capture high-quality live HD video from multiple cameras and stream it in real time to air.

The “Live PD” control room in New York receives feeds from multiple cities with the help of VidOvation’s AVIWEST DMNG PRO180 system.

CAPTURING MULTIPLE LOCATIONS
On a typical episode, “Live PD” covers officers in six cities, with as many as 40 live video feeds coming into a New York-based control room at A&E headquarters. With this large quantity of feeds, traditional satellite or microwave links were not only cost-prohibitive, but did not give us the mobility and flexibility needed to execute the show’s vision.

The solution was bonded cellular technology, which bonds any available combination of network interfaces including local cellular and Wi-Fi networks, Ethernet and satellite for high-quality and reliable video transmission links. Several bonded cellular systems were tested, but none of them could handle the multicamera and multi-location format of the show. One of the biggest problems was getting the multicams in each location to sync up without delays and lip-sync problems.

VidOvation’s AVIWEST DMNG PRO180 emerged as the best option. After a battery of testing, the AVIWEST DMNG system proved its ability to transmit video and audio from up to five cameras in close proximity with perfect lip-sync and video synchronization between all cameras. While TV news crews are rapidly adopting bonded cellular transmitters, to our knowledge, “Live PD” is the first prime-time entertainment television program to push the capabilities of this technology well beyond that of a typical stationary news report.

The series deploys 38 AVIWEST DMNG PRO180-RA bonded cellular transmitters, including one for each of the three HD cameras in every patrol car, two additional camera operators and an overhead drone that covers action outside the vehicle. Additionally, the team has installed an AVIWEST QUAD external antenna unit to each patrol car for even faster network acquisition and greater signal resilience.

THE FUTURE OF TV
Throughout the three-hour show, the DMNG PROs feed up to four video channels and eight audio channels of live, high-quality video back to the control room in New York from every patrol car in all six cities. In the control room, an AVIWEST DMNG Stream-Hub receiver, decoder and distribution platform receives the live video feeds and delivers them to air for the live broadcast.

“Live PD” is the future of live television. And of every bonded cellular solution we tested, AVIWEST was the only one that could really help us accomplish our creative goals for the show. The VidOvation-AVIWEST team really went the extra mile to help meet our technical requirements and make “Live PD” a ringing success.

Dan Cesareo is founder and owner of Big Fish Entertainment, a full-service content production company that creates visually-driven reality, branded and formatted programming for broadcast, new media and beyond. It uses the 403-473 MHz band to transmit tally and CCU functions, and sends data via Vidolink's RF-over-fiber SMPTE units, delivering RF, data, and power to the receive point with a single cable.

The two new products are members of the VidOlink family, which is designed to make field video acquisition, contribution and distribution faster and easier, with lower latency and higher video quality.

VidOvation has also added three new models to its lightweight, low-cost VidOlink Reacher long-range transmitters, including: the VidOlink Reacher 400, VidOlink Reacher 1,000, and VidOlink Reacher 2,000. Spanning transmission distances of 400, 1,000, and 2,000 feet, respectively, the systems transmit HD-SDI and HDMI video with near-zero latency, making them ideal for action sports shots in which near-zero latency is important.

The 2016 NAB Show takes place in Las Vegas, April 18-21. VidOvation will be in booth C1119. For more information, visit www.nabshow.com.

The system uses coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing to transport video within line-of-sight on the 5.8 GHz band.

Meanwhile, the VidOlink Tally & Control unit enables the addition of tally and CCU functionality to existing HD-SDI or HDMI video signals. It uses the 403-473 MHz band to transmit tally and CCU functions. The system can also send data via VidOlink’s RF-over-fiber SMPTE units, which delivers RF, data and power to the receive point with a single cable.

In addition, VidOvation also revealed it is expanding its VidOlink Reacher series of long-range transmitters with the addition of the VidOlink Reacher 400, VidOlink Reacher 1000 and VidOlink Reacher 2000. The three models span transmission distances of 400, 1000 and 2000 feet, respectively, to transmit HD-SDI and HDMI video with minimal latency, according to VidOvation.

VidOvation is manufacturer of video, audio and data communications systems for broadcast television and sports.
