                                <p><strong>PARIS</strong>—Ateme will feature technologies pushing the boundaries of transformation, monetization and experience at IBC 2024, Sept. 13-16, at the RAI Convention Center in Amsterdam, the company said today.</p><p>Ateme is helping to transform video delivery with infrastructure-neutral solutions that offer a choice between optimized on-premises and scalable cloud-centric options, including SaaS offerings. </p><p>The company is tearing down the barriers between on-the-ground and cloud operations, creating seamless, cost-effective workflows.                                 <p>The world is getting an unwelcome stress test of its video-delivery infrastructure. Hopefully, electronic-communications policymakers are taking careful notes as the world struggles to stop the virus spread and keep communications channels open for critical information and much-needed home education and entertainment.</p><p>When the crisis clears, we should be a lot smarter about how our video distribution system performs under a prolonged crisis and whether policy or industry adjustments are warranted.</p><p>Over the last 20 years, large amounts of spectrum use has been transferred to wireless services. This has helped accommodate the spike in unidirectional data traffic as video has become a champion bandwidth power-eater. Here’s what we’ve learned so far about wired and wireless internet status during the COVID-19 crisis:</p><ul><li>Concern runs high that the dramatic increase in video streaming traffic may overload the internet in certain places. Video streaming providers such as <a href="https://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2020/03/19/netflix-agrees-to-reduce-bitrate-during-coronavirus-crisis/?mc_cid=d92843830c&mc_eid=f6e4ad691f" target="_blank">Netflix</a> and <a href="https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/youtube-to-default-to-sd-to-preserve-bandwidth">YouTube</a>, as well as gaming suppliers Microsoft and Sony, announced they are making some provisions for lowering bandwidth requirements with low-resolution streaming during the crisis. Of course, most employ Adaptable Bit Rate (ABR) technology to automatically adjust resolution when networks get jammed, so this seems to be a sort of back-stop measure.</li><li>The crisis is fueling more than just record-level entertainment streaming. E-learning programs are being rolled out for entire school systems. In the business world, companies are conducting meetings over videoconferencing, and webinars are substituting for conferences and trade shows.</li><li>The internet’s unicast capabilities are allowing for much-needed remote access between healthcare providers and non-critical patients in a worldwide telemedicine experiment.</li></ul><p>Prioritizing video internet use during this emergency may force lower-priority applications (entertainment, for example) to pull back. What we knew before the crisis is that solely depending on <a href="http://www.dtcreports.com/weeklyriff/2019/01/29/video-distribution-maybe-one-size-doesnt-fit-all/" target="_blank">unicast distribution (whether wired or wireless) is inefficient</a>. We also knew that broadcast distribution is inherently more efficient, but many terrestrial broadcasters are operating with older systems that need updating to make the most efficient use of assigned spectrum. Fortunately, new digital TV systems such as <a href="http://www.dtcreports.com/weeklyriff/2020/02/11/beyond-tv-how-next-gen-standards-can-transform-the-broadcasting-business/" target="_blank">ATSC 3.0 and DVB-T2 with HEVC video coding</a> are now delivering more spectrally-efficient digital terrestrial TV (DTT) systems. Because TV broadcasters recognize that they must be hybrid service providers, the two systems combine (to different degrees) internet components with broadcast transmissions.</p><p>All of this is highlighted even more when you <a href="https://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2020/03/26/ebu-recommends-methods-to-avoid-internet-congestion/?mc_cid=3c95e97486&mc_eid=f6e4ad691f" target="_blank">consider that official recommendations for avoiding internet congestion from the EBU</a> to public service media organizations included “encouraging audiences to consume their offerings over broadcast rather than broadband, and on fixed broadband rather than mobile, where possible.”</p><p>This moment like no other moment should force the question: Is it reasonable—or wise—to expect all video content to be unicasted? To some, efficient use of resources might be considered a noble gesture, but not imperative. That sentiment seems foolish if our data delivery systems are overwhelmed and a worldwide economic recession (or worse) puts capital expenditures for laying fiber, installing scores of microcells and placing thousands of low-earth orbit internet satellites on the “to do much later” list.</p><p>Of course, TV broadcasters will take an economic hit just like every other business, but the capital outlay for upgrading DTT systems will be significantly less than for the aforementioned communications-infrastructure projects. That’s no guarantee that the DTT system upgrades will occur, but if they do, video distribution will be done more efficiently. Consider how a hybrid broadcast linear and internet delivery system could enhance <a href="https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/local-tv-stations-take-on-remote-learning-needs?utm_source=Selligent&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=15709&utm_content=TVT+3%2F25%2F20+&utm_term=966647&m_i=21MBGjIJNh%2BgevQhdnC_AiboO6jeuOJpHKjstxT84qmrLqgjkwhPq2EpHCvfSwThCoZ5pQkypauEOwBYUTn0ahZUd_x%2B1qH22X&M_BT=467352570462">remote-learning partnerships launched between U.S. public TV broadcasters and local education</a> systems during the COVID-19 crisis.</p><p>Apart from the need for efficiency, this moment like no other crystalizes the importance of local news, information and service. Consider the patchwork of orders/decrees/guidance from individual cities, counties, parishes and states in the U.S. Reliable reporting from trusted local news outlets with direct access to local officials is more critical than ever.</p><p>However our video communications infrastructure holds up at this time, there will come a day when governments, policymakers, industry leaders, educators and healthcare providers will issue report cards on how well these distribution networks served us. There will also be presentations and a panel discussion with representatives from Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elemental, Cobalt Digital, DVEO, Net Insight, Open Broadcast Systems, VideoFlow and Zixi.</p><p>A variety of topics will be discussed, including: the RIST Main Profile, encryption, high-end live media workflows, delivery of content to tens of millions of people using RIST, as well as how RIST and the cloud are transforming content distribution and the future of the format, the forum said.</p><p>“RIST is all about the combination of interoperability and innovation, giving the broadcast industry a simple yet highly effective method for interchanging professional signals between different vendors,” said Alexander Sandström, co-chair of the RIST Forum. “RIST has the potential to solve a lot of the complexity with live media workflows.”</p><p>RIST was jointly developed by a group of experts using a standards-based approach. RIST provides an open, interoperable and technically robust solution for low-latency live video over unmanaged networks.</p>

                                <p><strong>LAS VEGAS—</strong>Today there are more options to receive and consume video content than ever. Whether it is viewed on the big screen in the living room or on the smartphone, chances are satellite played a role in its delivery.</p><p><br/>During today’s conference on Satellite Technologies, the role that the satellite industry plays in broadcasting and delivery of high-quality video content from virtually anywhere to any place on the planet will come into sharp focus.</p><figure class="van-image-figure pull-" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' ><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="zDjMgxcKXowHic7kohXVQo" name="" alt="" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zDjMgxcKXowHic7kohXVQo.jpg" mos="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zDjMgxcKXowHic7kohXVQo.jpg" align="" fullscreen="" width="" height="" attribution="" endorsement="" class="pull-"></p></div></div></figure><p><em>Susan Irwin</em></p><p>The session will feature a satellite industry keynote speaker as well as three panel discussions that address the role that satellites high above the Earth continue to play in the delivery of ultra HD content, satellite broadband technology and even delivery of in-flight satellite entertainment and connectivity for the aviation industry.</p><p>The Satellites Technologies conference will feature the “Roundtable on Satellite Technology Innovation: Satellite Conquering the Challenges of Mobile Connectivity,” moderated by Susan Irwin, president of Irwin Communications and longtime satellite industry consultant.</p><p>This will include discussions on how the industry is addressing the technical challenges of delivering broadband from space and providing terrestrial-based Wi-Fi performance to mobile customers in aircraft at 40,000 feet as well as to those on the ground or at sea.</p><p>“The confluence of mobile and fixed satellite services, the proliferation of smallsats, NGSO constellations and HTS, and the evolution of innovative antenna technologies like Kymeta’s are the factors contributing to mobility becoming the hottest growth market for the satellite industry,” said Irwin.</p><p>Along with the opportunities that satellites bring in delivery of content to viewers, so, too, will the conference spotlight efforts to resolve issues that the industry has faced.</p><p>“Satellite interference is a persistent problem facing broadcasters across the globe,” said Martin Coleman, executive director of the Satellite Interference Reduction Group (IRG), who is moderating the panel “Is Technology Actually Solving Interference for the Broadcasters?”</p><p>“Although it only affects a minor number of services, the effects are naturally detrimental to the broadcasters when it does occur, especially if it affects live transmissions,” said Coleman, who will be joined by other solution providers and broadcasters. “This is indeed why it was the broadcasters who asked the satellite industry to resolve it several years ago.”</p><p>Coleman will discuss ways the industry is already tackling the problem, and the session panel will offer insight into the real challenges that broadcasters face as well as the tools and techniques that are being employed to solve the problems.</p><p>“We have an increasing range of tools at our disposal, and one of the biggest barriers when it comes to resolving interference for broadcasters is getting the broadcasters on board to do their bit,” said Coleman. “This session will be about setting down the gauntlet for broadcasters to adopt the available technology and help the operators help them.”</p><p>Satellites will continue to fly high and deliver the content to virtually any part of the world below. This will be addressed in sessions including “Satellite’s Growing Role in Over-The Top Content Delivery,” which will look into distribution of Ultra HD 4K, 8K and beyond; and “Satellite Broadband — New Constellations and High-Throughput Satellites Pointing to a Market Revolution, which will discuss global distribution strategies.</p><p>“The role that satellites play in the delivery of media and content is on the verge of a massive renaissance,” said Tom Stroup, president of the Satellite Industry Association.</p><p>“Enormous technological innovation in high-throughput data and antenna technology combined with revolutionary changes in low-cost, high-volume satellite manufacturing, the emergence of over-the-top (OTT) delivery, plus the continued development of interference reduction technologies will impact the way broadband services and content are delivered on land, sea and in the air,” Stroup said. “Plans for literally thousands of new spacecraft are being developed that will change the way consumers will receive content and services — some in ways we cannot even begin to conceive.”</p><p>Copyright NAB 2017. </p>
