What trends are in store for the professional video market in 2020? What do the economics of the industry tell you? As AVIXA’s senior director of market intelligence, it is Sean Wargo’s responsibility to research and provide insight into the pro-AV industry and what lies ahead.

Wargo will share the economics behind the ever-expanding visual side of AV and the opportunities for growth in his session “The Economics of Video” at The Video Show, a two-day event in Washington, Dec. 4–5.

The Video Show caught up with Wargo for just a minute ahead of the show.

The Video Show:Why should AV professionals care about economics?

Sean Wargo: Ultimately, the pro-AV industry provides goods and services to just about every underlying market in a given economy. Whether corporations or residential, these markets rely on AV technology to solve specific needs. As a result, the rise or fall of these markets can mean more or less available project work for an AV company. This rise and fall is exactly what economics measures and forecasts. So paying attention to economics can help provide an early warning system to potential changes in future demand for pro-AV products and services. GDP is an example of a metric to watch, as it summarizes the total economic activity within and across the globe. We’ll cover a bit about AVIXA’s take on GDP growth and the context it provides for our industry during our session.

TVS: What are the top three areas for growth in pro AV according to your research?

SW: Growth is an important distinction in pro AV because, looking forward, there is an important distinction between the largest areas and those that are growing the fastest. For example, right now the biggest solution area in pro AV is conferencing and collaboration at $38.6 billion globally. However, digital signage is growing faster and is expected to become the largest solution area by 2024, realizing compound annual growth of 5.8%. But that’s not all—performance/entertainment solutions, or the fixed installation of AV in venues like concert halls, houses of worship or corporate event facilities, are forecast to be the fastest growing over the next five years, rising by 8.9% on average per year. Security/Surveillance/Life Safety is another area of strong growth as country governments in particular invest in this type of infrastructure as part of smart-city initiatives.

The Video Show will feature more than 100 sessions on nine presentation stages, as well as a dedicated screening room, demo areas, streaming studio and dynamic exhibit floor.
RUSHWORKS Introduces its PTX Model 1L at The Video Show

Company heads to Washington DC witha complement of very cool production, playback and streaming solutions for a broad cross-section of applications

Flower Mound, Texas – November 20, 2019 - RUSHWORKS is heading to Washington DC! The provider of cool technology for production, playback and streaming has revealed plans to roll out its long-awaited PTX Model 1L at the recently re-branded The Video Show to be held in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington DC, from December 4-5, 2019. In addition to the new PTX model, RUSHWORKS will highlight RUSHDOLLY, its robotic camera platform in Booth 609 alongside other systems developed specifically to bring easy-to-operate, affordable solutions to a broad cross-section of markets.

“We are excited to be part of The Video Show, an event that attracts professionals in all areas of Broadcast, Government and Pro AV,” explained Rush Beesley, president and founder of RUSHWORKS. “Our solutions are designed for any individual or company that values reliability, creativity, ease-of-use, and early ROI. And we’re absolutely thrilled to have the new PTX Model 1L front and center with the small but powerful RUSHDOLLY creepy-crawling next to it on a track.”

RUSHWORKS rolls out the PTX Model 1L

Following on the global success of its PTX Model 1 PanTilt Head, RUSHWORKS has designed the Model 1L to include a more powerful tilt motor and a larger L-shaped tilt platform. The result allows expanded compatibility with wider and heavier camera/lens combinations including DSLR and mirrorless bodies like the Sony Alpha series and the versatile RX10 IV “bridge” camera with a 25x optical zoom lens.

Like the previous PTX Model 1, Model 1L can be controlled using RS-422 VISCA devices as well as DMX hardware and software. It includes connections for cameras that can be controlled using RS-422, RS-232, LANC and Panasonic REMOTE (2-wire) communications.

RUSHDOLLY puts cameras in motion

The “tiny but mighty” RUSHDOLLY supports cameras of all kinds, including those on PTX PanTilt heads and PTZ standalone models. It is fully integrated with RUSHWORKS CTRL+R Camera, Dolly and Switcher Control software – and with RUSHWORKS’ VDESK/REMO Integrated PTX/PTZ Production Systems.

RUSHWORKS will also be showing attendees how one integrated system can turn one person into the producer, writer, director, technical director and talent of a news program or entertainment show. VNEWS is the Company’s turnkey production system “in a box” that includes all the hardware and software necessary. It includes up to 4 x PTZ cameras, prompters, lights, microphones, computer and rundown software with Picture-in-Picture (PiP), double-box, Chroma-key, recording and streaming. Add an optional RUSHDOLLY - equally at home on the floor or suspended from the ceiling, creeping or strolling - for enhanced studio production value. VNEWS is perfect for K-12, Higher Ed, Broadcasters and Internet TV Stations.

VDEPO Video Deposition Recording System

Answering the need of a very specific market, RUSHWORKS brings VDEPO to meet the needs of those specializing in the production of on-location video depositions and courtroom support. Lightweight and small, it’s optimized for quick setup and noiseless touch-screen operation. It has four inputs, supports Picture-in-Picture (PiP), a graphic and video File Browser with search and playback, and ISO recording of all inputs. New features include cropping, highlighting and streaming.

Tried and True – Production and Playout Systems

Not to be forgotten, RUSHWORKS flagship production and playouts systems will also be at show. VDESK is an integrated multi-camera PTZ & PTX production system that includes switcher, effects, transitions and Chroma key, with local encoding and streaming functions.

The Company’s A-LISTBROADCAST Automation System, found in many of the world’s most recognized television facilities, provides all the features needed for 24/7 automation and supports SD and HD on up to FOUR independent channels. The OTT-only configuration, the A-LIST Streamster, will also be featured in the booth.

* * *

Founded in 2001, RUSHWORKS provides low-cost, high-performance television production, automation and video streaming solutions. These scalable and extensible solutions integrate networked video and graphics servers and encoders with "powerfully simple" automation software for Houses of Worship, Broadcast, Cable, PEG channels, Meetings, Events and Digital Signage. The company also designs and installs turnkey integrated media solutions for city government channels, including automation systems, encoders, audio support systems, large screen monitors, video presenter solutions, and other meeting room AV support.
Government videographers and photographers alike often are called on to do great work on incredibly small budgets. But it isn't only government entities that need to keep costs down when producing content. We've all heard the "doing more with less" mantra. So where do you start?

Stephen Badger, a public affairs officer with the Dept. of Natural Resources for Maryland, knows a thing or two about creating content on a small budget as the only dedicated videographer and photographer for a massive state agency that manages multiple department units. How does he do it? Badger will share his insight, tips and techniques in the session “Production on a Government (Shoestring) Budget” at The Video Show, a two-day event in Washington, Dec. 4–5.

The Video Show caught up with Badger for just a minute ahead of the show.

The Video Show:How does a single dedicated videographer and photographer support a massive state agency that manages police, parks, forestry and other units?

Stephen Badger: In short, I do whatever is necessary to accomplish the agency's goals, but there are challenges, of course. One of my biggest hurdles is sourcing quality imagery. Over the years, the department staff has generated some solid resources—built on the backs of photo contests, historic archives, volunteers, colleagues and more.

I'm also quite grateful for the support of those not directly involved with media production. My work wouldn't be possible without collaboration from field personnel and the agency's communications team. Their assistance with access, scheduling, scripting, publishing and promotion is indispensable.

TVS:Working with a constrained budget is a daily reality for many who work in and around government media. Share a tip that might be of help, as a preview of your session.

SB: Be frugal. Buy only the tools you need for the job that's required. Prioritize versatility. A solid, mirrorless or DSLR might fall on the lower end of industry standards, but works quite well in a variety of applications.

The Video Show will feature more than 100 sessions on nine presentation stages, as well as a dedicated screening room, demo areas, streaming studio and dynamic exhibit floor. According to the company’s Podcast Trends Report 2019 that number has climbed to 66%. Also this year, 82.4% reported they listen to podcasts for more than seven hours each week.

Have you and your station or company considered podcasting as a way to reach a larger audience? How do you get a podcasting program off the ground? The Video Show, a two-day event in Washington, Dec. 4–5, 2019, will feature an entire track on the basics of podcasting.

The session “Podcast Studio Design: Necessities, Variations and Options,” presented by John Storyk, a founding partner of Walters-Storyk Design Group, is a great place to get started. He’ll discuss how the company’s expertise developed studios from the ground up for both Stitcher and Spotify’s Gimlet Media, answering the unique needs of professional podcasting.

The Video Show caught up with Storyk for just a minute ahead of the show.

The Video Show:Your presentation at The Video Show is a case study on how you designed multiple studios/production workspaces for two of the biggest names in podcasting—Stitcher and Spotify’s Gimlet Media. Is creating a facility for podcasting much different than, say, creating one for recording music?

John Storyk: Super question… in many respects, the process is identical to recording studio (content creation spaces) design. All the aspects of the process have to be addressed—programming, pre-design, schematic design development, value engineering (budget!) construction documentation, construction administration, final commissioning, etc.

John Storyk

Many of the acoustic issues in studio design are also the same, but some differences do exist.

1. Podcasting environments are mostly associated with the spoken word. In fact, in one respect this makes things a bit easier—limited frequency range for design considerations. However, a new issue exists when creating multiple room facilities (such as Gimlet and Stitcher). The multiple podcasting rooms need to sound virtually identical. This is not always the case in small-room design for studios (i.e. multiple vocal booths). We will discuss this in more detail at the symposium in Washington.

2. Typically, podcasting rooms are small and for some reason podcasting companies frequently do not allow quite enough space for all the rooms including well-isolated construction (thicker than average walls); door swings; ADA requirements; sound locks; etc.

3. Podcasting rooms need to be very quiet—NC 15 is our starting point—not too different than many studios, but there is little room for negotiation here.

These are just some of the issues. Always a challenge!

TVS:The podcasting world is rapidly changing and maturing, as evidenced, for instance, by the fact that Spotify purchased Gimlet in the middle of your project. Did your clients find their expected needs for the studios changed during the design process?

JS: Not sure at all how to answer this—both Gimlet and Stitcher are in new facilities that have not been operating that long. I cannot imagine any studio that, when it opens it doors, does not see something they would like to have done a different way. We have tried to future-proof both facilities. Time will tell.

The Video Show will feature more than 100 sessions on nine presentation stages, as well as a dedicated screening room, demo areas, streaming studio and dynamic exhibit floor.
More than a website, Instagram is becoming the go-to platform for creative portfolio work and giving potential customers a real look at who they might consider for their video project. The session “Instagram for Video Producers” will be presented at The Video Show, a two-day event in Washington, Dec. 4–5.

Today’s social media is all about engagement. Are you engaging correctly? Cinematographer Rob Adams will show you how Instagram's features can help you generate new leads, market your “storybrand” and give you an edge over your competition. He will share ways you can leverage Instagram to build your video business.

The Video Show caught up with Adams for just a minute ahead of the show.

The Video Show:What’s the most common misperception that people working in video may have about Instagram and how to use the platform for their business?

Rob Adams: This is a great question because I don’t think many people in the video business have given enough consideration to the power of Instagram overall, let alone form any misconceptions. However, I think the biggest misconception among those who have dabbled with Instagram is that, in terms of image professionals, Instagram is a platform for photographers. They couldn’t be more wrong.

Instagram, and Facebook for that matter, both favor video posts higher over still photo posts in their algorithms. They get more organic reach and better organize engagement than photo-only posts. That is, of course, how the algorithm is active at this point in time. That means these platforms are actually inclined more toward video posts.

Instagram and Facebook each have created video-only platforms with IGTV and Facebook Watch, respectively. Add in the fact that Instagram (and Facebook) Stories allow you to post 15-second videos in an endless string of vertical, temporary posts for instant reach, placement and tagging, and you have what it essentially is a video-centric platform. This creates boundless opportunities for business marketing and letting customers and clients see something video-wise about you and your product(s) 24/7.

TVS:You’ve done a great deal of work in weddings (and are speaking at The Video Show in a separate session on that theme). How has your work in weddings informed your work in other areas of video, and what can others learn from that?

RA: Filming and editing weddings and doing it well is one of the most under-rated, under-valued skills in all of video and filmmaking. Think about it this way: I have no script. I have no actors. No storyboard. I have minimal crew. I have no control over sets, lighting, sound and, most of all, I have zero control over time. And I still have to create an amazing product that people will spend thousands of dollars for.

This places me at a severe disadvantage in trying to create videos that have a Hollywood quality or even look like something more than a run-and-gun mess of footage. Where I’ve excelled in weddings at anticipating action, working and thinking quick on my feet with the deck stacked against me has made my scripted, storyboarded shoots so much easier. They’re a luxury. It’s also made me a far better editor. It’s one thing to be handed a bunch of amazing footage from a nicely scheduled, thoughtful shoot and have a plan for postproduction. But to have to take footage that essentially abides by an “It is what it is...” mentality, I’ve learned to edit sequences that are completely born in post, but surprisingly, work amazingly well in a creative context.

We have been able to formulize some things, but overall, you never know what you’re going to face with every shoot. Good wedding filmmakers have great insight into how to solve problems on-set, how to create beauty and drama where none exist and tend to be amazing storytellers. We also are forced to be people-pleasers and cannot sit back idly and wait for a director to call “Action!” In any business that is valuable knowledge and has helped me tremendously in my small- and large-scale commercial jobs. [Adams will also present the session “How Not to Screw Up a Wedding Video.”]

The Video Show will feature more than 100 sessions on nine presentation stages, as well as a dedicated screening room, demo areas, streaming studio and dynamic exhibit floor. Attendees can learn all about it from Tom Trainor, a director of photography on the Animal Planet series “Into Alaska” as he shares his experiences. Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore the world from the jungles and cultures of the Amazon with Celene Di Stasio and Shane Yeager of Digital Creative Visionaries. They’ll share their insight, as well as drone footage and interviews with the local people.

Along with traveling the world, documentaries can also help us learn about how to continue to protect it and the creatures that occupy it. That will be a key focus in the session led by Roshan Patel, a filmmaker at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, who documents and educates viewers on some of the world’s most endangered species.

The full list of sessions currently scheduled for the documentary track is available on the Video Show website.

The Video Show will take place from Dec. 4–5 in Washington, D.C.

Covering the White House is an amazing responsibility for any journalist, never more so than in 2019. Doing it for the Voice of America brings its own challenges and opportunities. The session “VOA at the White House: Covering the Administration” will be presented at The Video Show, a two-day event in Washington, Dec. 4–5.

In the session, Steve Herman, White House bureau chief for the Voice of America, will share his experiences, some of the hard lessons he has learned and how VOA approaches its role in today’s contentious media climate. How do you cram a pool of 22 reporters, videographers, still photographers and audio tech into the Oval Office anyway?

The Video Show caught up with Herman for a minute ahead of the show.

The Video Show:How is your approach to covering the White House different than the other correspondents there?

Steve Herman: VOA broadcasts to the rest of the world in 47 languages, we do not target a domestic U.S. audience. So our focus is quite different on White House issues than most news outlets covering the administration. Stories that have a geo-political angle—something about Russia or Africa, for example—are important to our audiences, who are less interested in West Wing process stories that might be consuming the attention of most White House reporters on any given day.

TVS:What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of the White House beat?

SH: Multitasking, definitely. When I’m in the Oval Office or on the tarmac next to Air Force One with the president, I’m simultaneously recording broadcast-quality audio for all the radio networks as the pool reporter, sending pool reports to those networks, also snapping a few photos or recording a video clip on my iPhone and then tweeting out the gist of what’s happening.

The Video Show will feature more than 100 sessions on nine presentation stages, as well as a dedicated screening room, demo areas, streaming studio and dynamic exhibit floor.
As election campaigns pick up the pace for 2020, what is involved in producing, shooting and editing TV ads and digital media for political campaigns? The session “Getting Into Politics: Best Practices for Those Behind the Camera” will be presented at The Video Show, a two-day event in Washington, Dec. 4–5, 2019.

In the session, Nate Kresge, co-owner and executive director at GK Visual, will share his thoughts on the process, and the technical and creative challenges and solutions associated with creating political videos. He'll also discuss tips for getting into the political industry and working with candidates for the first time.

The Video Show caught up with Kresge for just a minute ahead of the show.

The Video Show:With the foreign election meddling in 2016 that took advantage of social media platforms, and Twitter’s recent decision to ban political ads altogether, do you think there is still a place for campaign videos on social media?

Nate Kresge: I think there will always be a place for campaign videos on social media. I think the content of those ads will be what changes. Viewers are becoming much more savvy and want content that is genuine and authentic. We are already seeing candidates using their smartphones to upload videos from the campaign trail with huge success.

TVS:How have advances in technology (use of drones, 4K, VR, smartphones) affected the way election videos are produced?

NK: Technology has grown the political video industry by leaps and bounds. When I first started in this field 16 years ago consultants and campaigns thought it was a waste of time to have a website, let alone post video online. It would also take us much longer to turn around a spot. Now we can turn a spot around in less than 24 hours. Advancements such as drones and 4K cameras are just improving the look of our work and making productions more affordable.

The Video Show will feature more than 100 sessions on nine presentation stages, as well as a dedicated screening room, demo areas, streaming studio and dynamic exhibit floor.
WASHINGTON—Taking place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., from Dec. 4–5, The Video Show is a two-day educational event with more than 100 educational and informational sessions, and an exhibit floor with tutorials and demonstrations, all designed for video professionals and enthusiasts.

Debuting in the United Kingdom in 2018, The Video Show is produced by TV Technology’s parent company, Future Plc.

“We wanted to develop an event that was almost entirely content driven—offering sessions from more than 100 speakers focusing on 16 different areas critical to today’s video professionals,” said Johnny Sullens, Future’s head of events.

Those 16 areas of focus will be explored across eight stages with more than 100 sessions over the two-day conference and cover a variety of topics that are designed to satisfy attendees no matter what field they come from. The full schedule can be found at www.thevideoshow.com.

“More than anything, we really want to support the region’s creative community and help its members develop and evolve,” said Cristina Clapp, content director for the conference. “I’d like the show to teach anyone attending something—hopefully many things—new, useful, constructive, inspiring. We want everyone to leave each day with more skills, more knowledge, more expertise—and head into new projects better equipped.”

CONTENT IS KING

Video has become such an integral part of countless industries, and while the sessions each have their own unique focus, the goal is to have attendees take in any program and learn something that they can apply to their particular area of interest, be that sports production, independent filmmaking, social media or wedding videography.

<img id="QS4Zzs2eB2SCXKJfpPByp9" name="" alt="The Walter E. Terry Scutt, content director at Future and coordinator for the Producing News and Video in D.C. stream, has lined up individual sessions that will cover local news production, best practices for creating political ads or videos, the waiver process for drone operators trying to enter “no-fly zones” and a profile of unique locations with the D.C. Office of Cable Television, Film, Music and Entertainment. But her personal favorite session satisfies the sweet tooth, as Michael F. Cormier, the director of photography for TLC’s “DC Cupcakes,” will give a behind-the-scenes look at the show filmed in Georgetown.

TECHNOLOGY OF THE FUTURE

Beyond the city limits of the nation’s capital, streams like the Future of Video will offer attendees some advice on how video can be expected to evolve in the coming years.

“Technology is changing all the time, so we’re bringing together as many experts as we can to address different aspects—whether it’s exploring new imaging formats, looking at how to manage 8K content or considering how 5G will impact video delivery,” said Clapp, who is serving as the session’s coordinator.

Other highlights of the Video Show will include a question and answer session with the filmmaking team behind the award-winning documentary “17 Blocks;” a session on the future of mobile journalism as well as a boot camp focused on some of the tricks of the trade; CreativeMediaMatter’s Gail McCabe will offer guidance on how to prepare and reduce stress when shooting solo; and the founder of PBS NewsHour’s Student Reporting Lab will be joined by students currently in the program and creating news for PBS stations.

“Honestly, each time we finalize a session, that’s my new favorite one,” said Clapp.

The exhibit floor will feature industry-leading brands and innovative tech startups so attendees can discover and get hands-on with all of the latest products and software from exhibitors such as AJA, Canon, ENCO, K5600, LAWO, Quantum and many more.

“This year the goal is to establish The Video Show as an exciting platform for the mid-Atlantic video community, and then going forward we really want to grow the event in all aspects—education, visitors, networking sponsors and exhibitors,” Sullens said.

You can get the chance to experience The Video Show yourself Dec. 4–5.
